History

Early Career

Kanu began his senior career in Nigeria before moving to Europe. His performances earned him a move to Ajax in the early 1990s, where he joined a talented squad under Louis van Gaal.

At Ajax, he developed from a young forward into an important attacking player. The club's technical style suited his ability to control the ball, combine with teammates and create opportunities around the penalty area.

Ajax

Kanu spent three seasons with Ajax and became part of the team that dominated Dutch and European football in the middle of the 1990s. He was included in the Ajax squad that won the UEFA Champions League in 1995.

Ajax defeated AC Milan 1-0 in the 1995 final in Vienna. Kanu was part of a squad that also included players such as Edwin van der Sar, Frank de Boer, Ronald de Boer, Finidi George, Jari Litmanen and Patrick Kluivert.

The following season, Ajax again reached the Champions League final. They lost to Juventus on penalties in Rome, but Kanu's performances had already established him as one of the emerging Nigerian players in European football.

Inter Milan

After his successful period in Amsterdam, Kanu moved to Inter Milan in 1996. His time in Italy was interrupted by a serious heart problem that required surgery and kept him away from football for a long period.

He eventually returned to competitive football and continued his career in Europe. His recovery became an important part of his story because he went on to enjoy many more successful seasons after the medical setback.

With Inter, he was part of the team that won the UEFA Cup in 1998.

Arsenal

Kanu joined Arsenal in February 1999. His arrival marked the beginning of one of the most successful periods of his club career.

He scored 44 goals in 198 appearances for Arsenal and won two Premier League titles and two FA Cups during his five years at the club.

One of his most memorable Arsenal performances came against Chelsea in the Premier League in October 1999. Arsenal were losing 2-0 before Kanu scored a hat-trick in the final stages to complete a remarkable 3-2 comeback.

Another famous moment came against Tottenham Hotspur in May 1999. Kanu produced a spectacular piece of skill before scoring in a 3-1 Arsenal victory, a moment that became one of the memorable highlights of his early Arsenal career.

He was part of the Arsenal teams that won the Premier League in 2001-02 and 2003-04, as well as the FA Cup in 2002 and 2003.

West Bromwich Albion

After leaving Arsenal in 2004, Kanu joined newly promoted West Bromwich Albion. UEFA reported at the time that he signed a three-year contract after being released by Arsenal.

He spent two seasons at the club before moving on in 2006. His experience and reputation made him one of the most recognisable players in the West Brom squad during this period.

Portsmouth

Kanu joined Portsmouth in 2006 and remained with the club for several seasons. His most famous Portsmouth moment came in the 2008 FA Cup final against Cardiff City.

He scored the only goal of the final as Portsmouth won the FA Cup at Wembley. The victory gave Kanu another major English trophy and added another memorable chapter to his career. UEFA later reported that Kanu's FA Cup goal earned Portsmouth the trophy and qualification for the UEFA Cup.

He remained with Portsmouth after their FA Cup success and continued to make appearances in European competition.

His international career covered four FIFA World Cup tournaments, several Africa Cup of Nations campaigns and the 1996 Olympic Football Tournament.

1996 Olympic Gold

The 1996 Olympic tournament in Atlanta became one of the defining moments of Kanu's career.

Nigeria defeated Hungary and Japan in the group stage before facing Brazil in the quarter-finals. Brazil took a 3-1 lead in the semi-final, but Nigeria produced a remarkable comeback. Kanu scored the late equaliser and then struck the golden goal in extra time to complete a 4-3 victory.

Nigeria then defeated Argentina 3-2 in the final to become the first African country to win Olympic football gold. Kanu captained the team, alongside players such as Jay-Jay Okocha, Sunday Oliseh, Daniel Amokachi and Taribo West.

1998 World Cup

Kanu was part of Nigeria's squad at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. Nigeria opened the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Spain before defeating Bulgaria 1-0 to reach the knockout stage.

The Super Eagles were eliminated in the Round of 16 after a 4-1 defeat to Denmark. The tournament was Kanu's first World Cup finals appearance.

2002 World Cup

Kanu returned for Nigeria's 2002 World Cup campaign in South Korea and Japan. Nigeria were drawn with Argentina, England and Sweden and were eliminated in the group stage.

The tournament was part of a period in which Kanu remained one of the experienced figures in the Nigerian squad.

2006 World Cup Qualification and International Career

Nigeria narrowly missed the 2006 World Cup after finishing behind Angola in their qualifying group. Kanu continued to represent the national team and remained involved in major African competitions.

He played at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola and was also involved in Nigeria's 2010 World Cup campaign in South Africa. His final international appearance came against Kenya on 29 March 2011. RSSSF records that match as his 86th cap.

His ability to play with his back to goal allowed him to bring midfielders and other attackers into the game. He was also capable of producing unexpected pieces of skill around defenders, which became one of the recognisable features of his game.
