Huế FC - Vietnam V.League 2 History, Seasons, Results and Records

By · October 04, 2026

Huế FC is a Vietnamese football club from the city of Huế, the former imperial capital of Vietnam. The club dates back to 1976 and has spent much of its modern history moving between Vietnam's top flight, V.League 2 and the national Second Division. Over the years, Huế have also played under different sponsor-linked names, most notably Huda Huế.

The club's most successful period came in the 1990s when Huế reached the top level of Vietnamese football and finished as runners-up in the 1995 national championship. Huế also reached the Vietnamese Cup final in 2002 and later rebuilt the team around young local players. That development eventually produced promotion from the Second Division in 2013.

In 2025, Huế were relegated from V.League 2 after finishing bottom of the table. The club immediately responded in 2026, winning promotion back to Vietnam's second tier after beating Lâm Đồng 3-0 in the promotion semi-final.

History

Huế FC - Vietnam V.League 2 History
Huế FC is one of Vietnam's historic football clubs, representing the ancient capital of Huế and playing its home matches at Tự Do Stadium.

Early football history in Huế

Football has a much older history in Huế than the modern club itself. Historical records describe football matches being played in the city during the colonial period, including games between French soldiers' teams and Vietnamese teams.

Before the establishment of the modern club structure, Huế teams competed in regional and central Vietnamese football competitions. A Huế-based side finished as runners-up in the Indochina and Central Vietnam football championships in 1941, 1943 and 1944.

After 1975, the Bình Trị Thiên team became an important predecessor of the modern Huế football structure. The team initially competed in regional competitions before entering the national league system.

Formation and rise of Huế football

Huế FC traces its modern foundation to 1976. During the early years of the national league system, the team spent time outside the top division before developing into one of the stronger sides from central Vietnam.

By the early 1990s, Huế had developed sufficiently to compete for promotion to the country's highest level. In 1993, after a series of reorganisations and consolidations, the Thừa Thiên Huế side reached the top division.

The 1995 breakthrough

The 1995 season remains one of the most important years in Huế football history. The Thừa Thiên Huế team reached the final stage of the national championship and eventually finished as runners-up.

The team defeated established opponents including Lâm Đồng, An Giang and Cảng Sài Gòn during its run. Huế eventually lost the final to Công An Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh.

The achievement made Huế one of the leading teams in Vietnamese football at the time. The club's strong campaign included 10 wins from 18 matches, with 19 goals scored and 20 conceded under the competition's unusual points and penalty-shootout format.

Relegation and return

Huế could not maintain its position at the top level after the 1995 success and was relegated the following season.

The club returned to the upper level in 1998 after winning promotion through the play-offs against Hải Quan. The late 1990s therefore became an important period in the club's history, with Huế moving between the country's first and second tiers.

Huế then spent several seasons in the top division. In the 1999-00 national championship, the club finished seventh, recording nine wins, five draws and ten defeats. The following season brought an eighth-place finish before Huế ended the 2001-02 campaign ninth and entered the relegation play-off picture.

Huda Huế and the 2002 Vietnamese Cup final

One of the best-known sponsor names associated with the club was Huda Huế. The team reached the Vietnamese Cup final in 2002, giving Huế a chance to win one of the country's major domestic trophies.

Huế ultimately finished as runners-up in the competition. The same period also marked the end of another spell in the top division after the team lost a relegation play-off against Hà Nội ACB.

2003 to 2011: rebuilding in V.League 2

After dropping into the second tier, Huế became a regular competitor in what is now known as V.League 2. The club remained competitive for much of this period.

In 2004, Huế finished third with 13 wins, six draws and three defeats. Two years later, the team again finished third after recording nine wins, 12 draws and five defeats.

The 2007 season brought another promotion opportunity. Huế returned to the top division after winning a promotion play-off against Hải Phòng on penalties. The promoted side was notable for its young players, many of whom had developed through youth football in Huế.

The return to the top level lasted only one season. Huế finished 14th in 2007 with four wins, eight draws and 14 defeats and was relegated back to V.League 2.

2011 relegation and a new beginning

Huế remained in V.League 2 from 2008 to 2011, but the 2011 campaign ended badly. The team won only four of its 26 matches, drew eight and lost 14, scoring 31 goals and conceding 51.

The club was relegated to the Vietnamese Second Division. At the same time, Huế faced financial difficulties after the withdrawal of Huda Beer as a major sponsor.

The club responded by adopting the name Huế Football Club without a sponsor name and rebuilding the squad around young players from the local football system. Players who had developed through Huế youth football became an important part of the project.

2013 Second Division title

The rebuilding programme produced immediate results. In 2013, Huế won the Vietnamese Second Division and earned promotion back to V.League 2.

The team played nine matches during the campaign, winning seven, drawing one and losing one. Huế scored 17 goals and conceded only four.

The promotion marked the beginning of a long period in which Huế established itself as a regular V.League 2 club.

Return to V.League 2

Huế finished fifth in the 2014 V.League 2 season. The young side recorded five wins, four draws and five defeats in a 14-match campaign.

The club then produced its strongest V.League 2 campaign in 2015, finishing second with seven wins, three draws and four defeats. The result placed Huế among the leading promotion contenders.

2016 and 2017 promotion challenges

Huế dropped to seventh in 2016 after recording six wins, four draws and eight defeats.

The team responded in 2017 by finishing second again. Huế won five matches, drew five and lost only two, scoring 21 goals and conceding 10.

The 2015 and 2017 campaigns remain two of the club's best V.League 2 finishes. However, Huế did not make the final step back to V.League 1.

2018 to 2020

Huế finished seventh in V.League 2 in 2018 with five wins, five draws and eight defeats.

The 2019 season saw the club finish sixth. Huế won nine of 22 matches, drew two and lost 11, scoring 33 goals and conceding 36.

In 2020, the club finished ninth after four wins, six draws and six defeats. The season was shortened and reorganised because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Huế remained in V.League 2 in 2021, but the national competition was ultimately cancelled because of the pandemic.

2022 to 2024

Huế returned to competitive league football in 2022 and finished seventh in V.League 2. The club recorded six wins, seven draws and nine defeats.

In 2023, Huế finished sixth with five wins, six draws and seven defeats. The following 2023-24 season was one of the club's better recent campaigns, as Huế finished fourth with eight wins, six draws and six defeats.

The 2023-24 team scored 26 goals and conceded 22, giving the club a positive platform going into the following season.

2024-25 relegation

The 2024-25 season turned into a difficult campaign for Huế. The club finished 11th and last in V.League 2 with four wins, four draws and 12 defeats.

Huế scored 16 goals and conceded 30, leaving the team with 16 points from 20 matches. The result sent the club down to the Vietnamese Second Division for the 2026 season.

2026 promotion back to V.League 2

Huế responded strongly to relegation. In the 2026 Vietnamese Second Division, the club finished second in Group A with 22 points and qualified for the promotion round.

In the promotion semi-final on 13 June 2026, Huế faced Lâm Đồng. Huế produced an impressive 3-0 victory, securing promotion back to Vietnam's second tier after only one season away.

The result was confirmed by the Huế city government, which described the achievement as Huế's return to the national first division for the 2026-27 season.

The 3-0 win was particularly important because Huế had finished the group stage with 22 points and had shown strong form during the second half of the campaign.

Home stadium

Huế play their home matches at Tự Do Stadium in Huế. The stadium has a long connection with football in the city and has been the home of the club during its different periods in the Vietnamese league system.

Players and youth development

Huế have traditionally relied heavily on players developed within the local football system. The rebuilding after the 2011 relegation placed particular emphasis on young players who had represented Huế at youth level.

This approach produced several players who later became important figures in Vietnamese football. Among the younger players associated with Huế during this period were Trần Danh Trung and Nguyễn Hữu Thắng.

The club's youth structure has therefore been an important part of its identity, particularly during periods when financial resources were more limited.

Club identity and names

The team has been known by several names during its history, often reflecting sponsorship arrangements and changes in the organisation of football in Huế.

1990s-2000s Thừa Thiên Huế

Huế FC's place in Vietnamese football

Huế have never been among Vietnam's richest or most dominant clubs, but their history is significant because of the club's longevity and repeated movement through the national league system.

The 1995 runners-up finish remains the club's highest league achievement. The 2002 Vietnamese Cup final was another major milestone, while the 2013 Second Division title demonstrated the club's ability to rebuild after relegation.

The two second-place finishes in V.League 2 in 2015 and 2017 showed that Huế could compete for promotion again. After a difficult 2024-25 campaign, the club's immediate return through the 2026 Second Division was another important chapter in its history.

2026-27 return to V.League 2

Huế will enter the 2026-27 V.League 2 season after securing promotion in June 2026. The return came only one season after relegation and gives the club another opportunity to establish itself in Vietnam's professional second tier.

The promotion victory over Lâm Đồng was one of the most significant recent results in Huế football. The city government later recognised the team and coaching staff for their successful 2026 campaign.

Conclusion

Huế FC's football history is defined by persistence. From its roots in the football culture of the former imperial capital to the 1995 national championship runners-up finish, the 2002 cup final, repeated promotions and relegations, the 2013 Second Division title and the 2026 return to V.League 2, the club has remained part of Vietnam's national football structure for decades.

Its history also reflects the development of football outside Vietnam's biggest football centres. Huế have repeatedly rebuilt with young local players and returned from difficult periods, making the club an important part of the country's football history.
