His goalscoring became particularly remarkable between 1983 and 1987. He finished as the Eredivisie's leading scorer for four consecutive seasons from 1983/84 through 1986/87, and his 37 league goals in 1985/86 earned him the European Golden Shoe.
AC Milan — 1987 to 1995
In 1987, Van Basten left Ajax for AC Milan. His first campaign in Italy was affected by injury, but Milan still won the Serie A title in 1987/88.

The 1988/89 season became one of the defining campaigns of his career. Milan won the European Cup, defeating Steaua București 4 to 0 in the final. Van Basten scored twice, while Ruud Gullit also scored twice. He finished that European Cup campaign as the competition's leading scorer with 10 goals.
Milan successfully defended the European Cup in 1989/90, beating Benfica 1 to 0 in the final. Van Basten was again an important part of the team.
He won another Serie A title with Milan in 1991/92, when he scored 29 goals in the club's season record listed by AC Milan. He also won the Serie A scoring title that season. Milan retained the Italian championship in 1992/93, giving Van Basten his third Serie A winner's medal.
His final two seasons were devastated by injury. He did not play during the 1993/94 or 1994/95 seasons, despite remaining registered with Milan. After spending two years unable to return to competitive football, he announced his retirement in 1995.

Biography
Childhood
Marco van Basten was born in Utrecht on 31 October 1964. He grew up in the Netherlands during a period when Dutch football was developing a strong reputation for technical ability and attacking football.
He began playing football at a young age and eventually moved through local clubs before joining Ajax in 1981. The move to Amsterdam gave the teenager an opportunity to develop within one of the most respected football academies in Europe.
Van Basten's development was relatively quick. He was already involved with Ajax's first team at 17 and scored on his senior debut. From there, his importance to the club increased season by season.
Playing Career – Ajax and the Rise of a Young Striker
Van Basten's first full seasons at Ajax showed that he was more than a promising youngster.
In 1982/83, he scored 10 goals in 25 listed appearances and helped Ajax win the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup. The following season brought a major jump in production. He scored 31 goals in 31 listed appearances during 1983/84 and became the Eredivisie's leading scorer.
His goals continued to rise.
During 1984/85, he scored 27 goals and again finished as the Dutch league's top scorer. Ajax won another league championship that season.
The 1985/86 campaign was even more productive. Van Basten scored 39 goals in the club's listed season record and claimed the European Golden Shoe after finishing as Europe's leading league scorer with 37 league goals.
In 1986/87, he produced another outstanding season, scoring 44 goals in the club's listed statistics. Ajax won the KNVB Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup. Van Basten scored the decisive goal in the European final against Lokomotive Leipzig.
By the end of the 1986/87 season, European clubs were competing for his signature. AC Milan eventually secured the Dutch striker.
Playing Career – AC Milan
Van Basten arrived at Milan in 1987 and became part of a Dutch core that would play a major role in the club's European success. Ruud Gullit had already joined him, while Frank Rijkaard later completed the celebrated Dutch trio.
His first season was difficult because of ankle problems, but he still contributed as Milan won Serie A in 1987/88.
The following season showed what Van Basten could produce when fully fit.
In 1988/89, Milan won the European Cup. Van Basten scored two goals in the 4 to 0 final victory over Steaua București. That same year, he received his first Ballon d'Or.
The 1989/90 season brought another European Cup. Milan defeated Benfica 1 to 0 in the final and became European champions for a second consecutive year.
Van Basten also won the Ballon d'Or again in 1989, becoming one of the most decorated individual players of the period.
Milan's domestic success continued. The club won Serie A in 1991/92, with Van Basten scoring 29 goals in the season's listed club statistics. He won the Serie A scoring title that year and collected his third Ballon d'Or in 1992.
Milan then retained the Italian championship in 1992/93. Van Basten scored 22 goals in 24 listed appearances, but his ankle problems were becoming increasingly serious.
He made his final competitive appearance in 1993. Further treatment and rehabilitation did not allow him to return to professional football, and after two seasons without playing he announced his retirement in 1995.
Playing Career – Netherlands
Van Basten made his Netherlands debut in 1983 and went on to earn 58 senior caps and score 24 goals.
His most memorable international tournament was the 1988 UEFA European Championship.
The Netherlands lost their opening group match 1 to 0 against the Soviet Union, with Van Basten beginning the tournament on the bench. He entered the starting lineup for the next match against England and responded with three goals in a 3 to 1 victory.
He then scored the Netherlands' winning goal against West Germany in the semi-final.
The final brought the Netherlands back together with the Soviet Union.
Ruud Gullit gave the Dutch the lead, before Van Basten scored one of the most recognised goals in European Championship history. From a difficult angle, he met Arnold Mühren's cross with a powerful volley that flew past Soviet goalkeeper Rinat Dasaev.
The Netherlands won 2 to 0 on 25 June 1988, claiming their first European Championship. Van Basten scored five goals in the tournament, making him the leading scorer. UEFA also included him in the official Team of the Tournament.
That tournament had a major impact on his reputation. His goals against England and West Germany were important to the Netherlands' route to the final, while the volley against the Soviet Union became the defining image of the competition.
Van Basten also represented the Netherlands at the 1990 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 1992. His international career ended in 1992 after 58 appearances and 24 goals.
Individual Awards and Achievements
Van Basten collected major individual awards during the peak of his career.
Dutch Footballer of the Year: 1985
European Golden Shoe: 1985/86
Ballon d'Or: 1988, 1989, 1992
FIFA World Player of the Year: 1992
European Championship top scorer: 1988
Serie A top scorer: 1989/90, 1991/92
European Cup top scorer: 1988/89
His three Ballon d'Or victories came while he was an AC Milan player, in 1988, 1989 and 1992. France Football's historical record also lists his European Golden Shoe in 1986 and his 1988 European Championship triumph and top-scoring achievement.
Managerial Career
After his playing career ended, Van Basten moved into coaching.
He became involved with the Netherlands national team and was appointed head coach in 2004. He managed the Dutch side at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2008.
After leaving the national team, he returned to Ajax as head coach for the 2008/09 season. He later managed Heerenveen from 2012 to 2014 and AZ Alkmaar from 2014 to 2015, although his coaching career never produced the same level of silverware as his playing days.
His transition into management gave him a second connection with the game after injuries had brought his playing career to an early end.
Marco van Basten's Place in Football History
Van Basten's playing career lasted from 1981 to 1995, but the period in which he performed at his highest level was considerably shorter because of his ankle problems.
Even so, the record is substantial. At Ajax, he won three Dutch league championships, three KNVB Cups and the 1987 European Cup Winners' Cup. At AC Milan, he collected three Serie A titles, two European Cups, two European Super Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and two Italian Super Cups. With the Netherlands, he won the 1988 European Championship.
His individual record is equally notable. Three Ballon d'Or awards, the European Golden Shoe, two Serie A scoring titles and the 1988 European Championship Golden Boot form part of a career that was interrupted before he reached what would normally be a footballer's later prime.
The 1988 European Championship remains the clearest snapshot of his ability. Five goals, including the famous volley in the final, helped turn the Netherlands into European champions. UEFA's own historical account identifies Van Basten's final goal as the decisive second goal in the 2 to 0 victory over the Soviet Union.
His story is therefore not simply about the trophies he won. It is also about how much he accomplished before persistent injury brought his playing career to an end. Ajax gave him his platform, AC Milan provided the stage for his greatest club achievements, and the Netherlands gave him the opportunity to produce one of the defining tournament performances of the late 1980s.
Marco van Basten retired from professional football at a relatively young age, but the records from his Ajax, Milan and Netherlands years continue to explain why his name remains an important part of football history.
