Andorra national football team represents the Principality of Andorra in international football. The team is one of the smaller national sides in European football, but its history has produced some memorable moments, including its first competitive victory, its famous 1-0 win over Hungary in 2017 and the emergence of players such as Ildefons Lima and Óscar Sonejee.
Football in Andorra developed relatively late compared with most European countries. The Andorran Football Federation was founded in 1994, and the country became a member of FIFA and UEFA in 1996. Since then, the national team has competed in FIFA World Cup qualifying, UEFA European Championship qualifying and the UEFA Nations League.

History of the Andorra National Football Team
Before the national federation was established, football in Andorra was mainly an amateur activity. Local players formed teams and played football without the international structure that existed in neighbouring countries.
The creation of the Andorran Football Federation in 1994 changed that situation. The federation joined FIFA and UEFA in 1996, giving Andorra official access to international football competitions.
FIFA records the federation's foundation in 1994 and its FIFA and UEFA membership from 1996. The national team's first competitive match came against Armenia in September 1998. Andorra lost that game 3-1, but Jesús Lucendo scored a historic goal because it was the country's first goal in a competitive international match.
Andorra's First International Matches
Andorra's early international matches were difficult. The country had a small player pool and was competing against established European football nations with much larger football systems.
The national team's early results were often heavy defeats, but those matches were important because they gave Andorran players regular exposure to international football.
The first major breakthrough eventually arrived in 2000 when Andorra defeated Belarus 2-0. FIFA identifies the victory on 26 April 2000 as the national team's first win after waiting four years and 24 matches.
| Milestone | Match | Year |
|---|---|---|
| First international match | Andorra 1-6 Estonia | 1996 |
| First competitive match | Armenia 3-1 Andorra | 1998 |
| First FIFA win | Andorra 2-0 Belarus | 2000 |
| First competitive win | Andorra 1-0 Macedonia | 2004 |
First Competitive Victory
One of the most important matches in Andorran football history took place on 13 October 2004.
Andorra defeated Macedonia 1-0 in a World Cup qualifying match in Andorra la Vella. Marc Bernaus scored the only goal of the game.
The result was more significant than a single victory. It was Andorra's first win in a competitive international match and showed that the team could eventually turn its defensive organisation into results against stronger opponents.
UEFA lists the victory as one of the important milestones in the development of Andorran football.
Andorra's Famous Win Over Hungary
The most famous result in the modern history of the Andorra national football team came on 9 June 2017.
Andorra defeated Hungary 1-0 in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Andorra la Vella. Marc Rebés scored the winning goal.
The result was particularly remarkable because Hungary had a much stronger international record and entered the match as the higher-ranked side.
FIFA described 2017 as a remarkable year for Andorra. Earlier that year, the national team had defeated San Marino 2-0 and drawn 0-0 with the Faroe Islands before beating Hungary.
The Hungary victory also ended a long period without a competitive win. FIFA reported that Andorra's success in 2017 helped the team rise significantly in the FIFA rankings.
Why the 2017 Hungary Match Matters
The 1-0 win over Hungary is remembered because it demonstrated how far the Andorran team had developed since its early years.
Rather than trying to dominate possession against a stronger opponent, Andorra relied on defensive organisation, concentration and opportunities when they appeared. The result became one of the defining matches in the country's international football history.
For a small football nation, victories against established European opponents can become important reference points for future generations of players.
Andorra National Team Players
Several players have become closely associated with the history of the Andorra national team. Among them are Ildefons Lima, Óscar Sonejee, Jesús Lucendo, Marc Bernaus and Cristian Martínez.
Ildefons Lima
Ildefons Lima is one of the most recognisable players in Andorran football history. The defender spent many years representing his country and became captain during one of the team's most memorable periods.
Lima was involved in the famous 2017 victory over Hungary and became a key figure in Andorra's development.
His international career lasted for many years, and his appearances placed him among the country's most experienced players.
Óscar Sonejee
Óscar Sonejee holds a special place in Andorra's international history. UEFA records him as the first Andorran player to reach 100 international appearances.
Sonejee retired from international football in 2016 after making 106 appearances for Andorra.
His long career reflected the importance of experienced players during the early decades of the national team.
Jesús Lucendo
Jesús Lucendo was responsible for one of the earliest scoring milestones in Andorran football.
He scored Andorra's first goal in a competitive international match during the 3-1 defeat to Armenia in the EURO 2000 qualifying campaign.
Lucendo later played an important role in another historic moment when he scored from the penalty spot in Andorra's first FIFA victory over Belarus in 2000.
Marc Bernaus
Marc Bernaus became part of Andorran football history when he scored the winning goal against Macedonia in 2004.
His goal gave Andorra its first competitive victory and remains one of the important early milestones for the national team.
Andorra in FIFA World Cup Qualifying
Andorra has participated in FIFA World Cup qualifying but has never reached the World Cup finals.
The qualifying campaigns have nevertheless produced some memorable matches. The 1-0 victory over Hungary in 2017 is the clearest example, while draws against teams such as the Faroe Islands have also represented important milestones for the national side.
For Andorra, World Cup qualifying has provided regular opportunities to play against some of Europe's strongest national teams.
Andorra at the UEFA European Championship
Andorra has never qualified for the UEFA European Championship finals.
The country entered European Championship qualifying after joining UEFA and has continued to compete in successive qualifying campaigns.
The European Championship qualifiers have produced difficult matches against larger football nations, but they have also helped Andorra gain experience and develop players at international level.
UEFA's historical records show the goals and appearances accumulated by Andorra across European Championship qualifying campaigns.
| UEFA EURO record | Status |
|---|---|
| EURO finals appearances | 0 |
| EURO qualification participation | Yes |
| First EURO qualifying campaign | EURO 2000 |
Andorra and the UEFA Nations League
The UEFA Nations League gave Andorra another regular international competition and created more opportunities to play teams of a similar level.
The competition is particularly important for smaller European nations because it reduces their reliance on friendly matches and provides a structured league system with promotion and relegation.
Andorra has competed in the Nations League since the tournament began and has recorded victories and draws during its campaigns.
In the 2022 edition, Andorra defeated Liechtenstein 2-1 at home and won 2-0 in Vaduz. The team also recorded draws against Moldova and Latvia during that campaign.
The Nations League has therefore become an important part of the modern Andorra national team schedule.
Andorra National Team Stadium
The Estadi Nacional in Andorra la Vella is the principal national stadium used by the Andorra national football team.
The stadium opened in 2014 and has hosted international football matches involving Andorra. Its modern facilities have provided the national team with a dedicated venue for major UEFA and FIFA fixtures.
Playing at home is an important part of Andorra's football identity because the team regularly faces opponents with significantly larger populations and deeper professional football systems.

Andorra National Team All-Time Goalscorers
Andorra has never produced a prolific international goalscorer on the scale of Europe's major football nations, but several players have left their mark on the team's scoring history.
UEFA's EURO records list Ildefons Lima and Cristian Martínez among Andorra's leading scorers in European Championship qualifying, with three goals each in the competition's historical records.
Rosas has two EURO qualifying goals, while several other Andorran players have scored once.
The small number of goals reflects the difficulty Andorra has faced against stronger opponents during its international history.
Andorra National Team in Modern Football
The modern Andorra national team continues to develop through regular international competition.
Recent squads have included experienced players such as Josep Gómes, Marc García and Moisés San Nicolás alongside younger footballers including Ian Olivera and Biel Borra.
UEFA's current European qualifying records show a mixture of experienced internationals and younger players within the squad, demonstrating the continuing transition between generations.
Coach Koldo Álvarez has been associated with the team's long-term development and has overseen many of the national side's modern competitive campaigns.
How Andorra Has Developed as a Football Nation
Andorra's progress cannot be measured only by tournament qualification.
The country started international football with a very small football structure and quickly found itself competing against established European nations. Over time, the national federation developed youth football, domestic competitions and pathways for players to represent the senior team.
The introduction of the UEFA Nations League has also helped smaller nations by providing more meaningful matches and opportunities to compete against teams closer to their level.
The result is a national team with a much longer international history than it had during its first years as a FIFA and UEFA member.
Andorra National Football Team Summary
The history of the Andorra national football team is built around gradual progress and memorable milestones.
From the foundation of the Andorran Football Federation in 1994 to FIFA and UEFA membership in 1996, the country has established itself as a permanent part of European international football.
The first victory over Belarus, the first competitive win against Macedonia, the 2017 victory over Hungary and the long international careers of players such as Óscar Sonejee and Ildefons Lima are important chapters in that history.
Andorra has not yet qualified for a FIFA World Cup or UEFA European Championship finals, but the national team continues to compete in qualifying tournaments and the UEFA Nations League.
For a country with a small population and a relatively young international football structure, those milestones form an important part of the story of football in Andorra.
