Biography
Early life
Alexandre Dimitri Song Billong was born on 9 September 1987 in Douala, Cameroon. He moved to France at a young age and developed his football skills there before entering the youth system at Red Star and later SC Bastia.
Song came from a football family and is the nephew of former Cameroon captain and defender Rigobert Song. His early development in France eventually led him into professional football with Bastia.
Beginning his professional career at Bastia
Song joined the SC Bastia youth system in 2001 and progressed through the club's ranks. He made his professional debut for Bastia in 2004 and quickly attracted attention with his versatility and physical presence in midfield.
Although he was still a teenager, Song was able to compete regularly at senior level. His performances in France eventually attracted the attention of Arsenal, who brought him to England on loan in 2005.
Joining Arsenal
Alex Song arrived at Arsenal in 2005 as a teenager on loan from Bastia. He made his Arsenal debut during the 2005–06 season and gained valuable experience playing alongside some of the club's established players.
Arsenal were impressed enough with his performances to make the move permanent. Song officially became an Arsenal player in 2006.
Arsenal's official profile describes Song as arriving at the club as a raw teenager and leaving seven years later as a more polished midfielder. His early Arsenal career also included a loan spell at Charlton Athletic, where he gained regular first-team experience.
Loan spell at Charlton Athletic
During the 2006–07 season, Song spent time on loan at Charlton Athletic. He made 12 Premier League appearances for the club and gained important experience in a team competing at the highest level of English football.
Although Charlton were eventually relegated, Song's performances during his loan spell helped his development. He returned to Arsenal with greater experience and gradually became a more important member of the squad.
Becoming an important Arsenal midfielder
Song's breakthrough at Arsenal came during the late 2000s. Initially viewed primarily as a defensive midfielder, he gradually became more comfortable contributing to Arsenal's possession-based style of football.
He developed a strong understanding with Cesc Fàbregas in midfield and became increasingly trusted by Arsène Wenger. His ability to win the ball, protect the defence and move forward with possession made him an important part of the Arsenal team.
One of his memorable moments came in September 2010 when he scored Arsenal's 1,000th Premier League goal under Arsène Wenger during a 4–1 victory over Bolton Wanderers.
Arsenal and the 2011–12 season
The 2011–12 season was arguably one of Song's most productive campaigns at Arsenal. While still primarily a defensive midfielder, he showed greater attacking influence and became one of the team's important providers from midfield.
Arsenal's official records note that Song finished the season with 14 assists in all competitions and finished second in the club's Player of the Season poll.
By this stage, Song had developed into an established Premier League midfielder and was attracting interest from major European clubs.
Move to Barcelona
In August 2012, Song joined FC Barcelona after six seasons as a permanent Arsenal player. The transfer represented a major step in his career as he moved from the Premier League to one of Europe's most successful clubs.
At Barcelona, Song played alongside some of the biggest names in world football, including Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta and Sergio Busquets.
Barcelona's official player records list Song as a first-team player from 2012 to 2014 and credit him with one goal in 66 official appearances during those two seasons.
