When it comes to football history, Albania were the first The history of the Albania national football team is a story of patience, difficult qualifying campaigns and a gradual rise onto the European stage. For many years, Albania were among the teams struggling to make an impact in major international competitions. That changed dramatically in the 21st century, when a new generation of players helped the country reach its first major tournament at UEFA EURO 2016.

Albania followed that breakthrough with another European Championship appearance at EURO 2024. The team also came close to making history in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, finishing second in their group and reaching the UEFA play-offs for the first time. Although they were eliminated by Poland in the play-off semi-final, the campaign marked another important stage in the development of Albanian football.

Known as the Kuqezinjtë, meaning the Reds, Albania play their home matches at the Air Albania Stadium in Tirana. Their football history includes a Balkan Nations Cup victory in 1946, memorable wins over established European sides and a growing collection of players who have represented the country at major clubs across Europe.

History

Early of Albanian Football

The Football Association of Albania was established in 1930, but the national team did not play its first international match until 1946. Its first recorded international was a 5-0 victory over Montenegro in Shkodër on 22 September 1946.

Only weeks later, Albania hosted the Balkan Nations Cup in Tirana. The tournament brought together Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and Yugoslavia, and the hosts produced one of the earliest achievements in the country's football history by defeating Romania 1-0 in the final.

The early years were difficult because Albania had limited opportunities to compete regularly against Europe's strongest national sides. Nevertheless, the team produced occasional results that became important parts of its history.

Albania's Early Competitive Years

Albania's competitive football history included several memorable results against much more established opponents. In the 1960s, the team held Northern Ireland to a 1-1 draw in a World Cup qualifying match involving a Northern Irish side that included George Best and Pat Jennings.

Another famous result came in European Championship qualifying in 1967, when Albania held West Germany to a goalless draw in Tirana. The result prevented West Germany from progressing from their qualifying group and remains one of the most remembered results from Albania's early international history.

For much of the following decades, however, Albania struggled to qualify for major tournaments. The team entered World Cup and European Championship qualifying campaigns without reaching a final tournament.

Long Road to EURO 2016

The biggest transformation in modern Albanian football came during the 2010s. A generation containing players such as Lorik Cana, Elseid Hysaj, Taulant Xhaka, Ermir Lenjani, Mërgim Mavraj and goalkeeper Etrit Berisha helped establish a more competitive national side.

Under Italian coach Gianni De Biasi, Albania produced an outstanding qualifying campaign for EURO 2016. The team finished behind Portugal and Denmark's group rivals? Actually, Albania secured qualification by finishing second in Group I, ahead of Denmark and Serbia.

The decisive moment came in the final stages of qualification. Albania defeated Armenia 3-0 away from home in October 2015, confirming their place at the European Championship for the first time in the country's history. UEFA records the victory as the result that secured Albania's historic qualification.

EURO 2016

Albania arrived in France for EURO 2016 as tournament debutants. They were placed in Group A alongside France, Switzerland and Romania.

Armando Sadiku scored the winning goal against Romania, giving Albania their first victory at a major international final tournament. The 1-0 victory also made Sadiku the first Albanian player to score at a major tournament.

Albania finished third in the group with three points. They did not advance to the knockout stage, but the tournament represented a major milestone for the national team. UEFA lists EURO 2016 as Albania's first European Championship final tournament and records the victory over Romania as their first EURO win.

EURO 2024 and a New Generation

Albania returned to the European Championship eight years after their debut. The qualification campaign for EURO 2024 was one of the strongest in the country's history.

Albania finished first in Group E, collecting 15 points from eight matches. They conceded only four goals during the qualifying campaign and secured their place at the tournament with a 1-1 draw away to Moldova.

The team was coached by Sylvinho, whose squad included players such as Berat Djimsiti, Kristjan Asllani, Nedim Bajrami, Armando Broja, Elseid Hysaj and Thomas Strakosha. UEFA described Djimsiti as an important defensive figure heading into the tournament.

Albania were drawn into Group B with Italy, Croatia and Spain.

The opening match against Italy produced one of the most memorable moments in Albanian football history. Nedim Bajrami scored after only 23 seconds, setting the record for the fastest goal ever scored at a UEFA European Championship final tournament. Italy eventually came back to win 2-1.

Against Croatia, Albania produced another memorable performance. Qazim Laçi gave Albania the lead before Croatia recovered. Klaus Gjasula then scored an own goal before dramatically equalising for Albania in stoppage time. The 2-2 draw remains Albania's highest-scoring match at a European Championship.

Albania entered their final group match against Spain needing a positive result to keep their qualification hopes alive. Spain won 1-0, leaving Albania fourth in the group and outside the knockout stage.

Albania's overall EURO final tournament record after EURO 2024 stood at six matches, one win, one draw and four defeats. The team had scored four goals and conceded eight.

Albania and the FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup remains the major tournament that Albania have yet to reach. The country has entered numerous qualifying campaigns but has never appeared in the World Cup finals.

The 2026 qualification campaign came closer than many previous attempts. Albania were placed in Group K alongside England, Serbia, Latvia and Andorra. They finished second with four wins, two draws and two defeats, collecting 14 points and conceding only five goals.

The campaign included important results against Serbia, with Albania taking four points from their two matches against their Balkan neighbours. Finishing second sent Albania into the UEFA play-offs for the first time.

In the play-off semi-final on 26 March 2026, Albania faced Poland in Warsaw. Poland won 2-1, ending Albania's hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup. Arbër Hoxha scored Albania's goal, while Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zieliński scored for Poland.

As a result, Albania still have no World Cup final tournament appearance. FIFA's historical record also lists zero World Cup appearances for Albania, while the 2026 qualifying campaign became their first route into the UEFA play-offs.

Albania in the UEFA Nations League

The UEFA Nations League has given Albania another regular competitive platform outside World Cup and European Championship qualifying. The competition has also allowed the team to face opponents of a similar level more frequently.

Albania's 2026/27 campaign is being played in League C, Group C1 alongside Belarus, Finland and San Marino. The team opened the campaign with a 2-0 victory over Belarus on 26 September 2026 and followed it with a 3-0 away victory against San Marino on 29 September.

The remaining group fixtures are against Finland, San Marino and Belarus in October and November. The Nations League campaign is therefore part of the team's continuing development after the 2026 World Cup qualifying disappointment.

Famous Albanian Players

Lorik Cana

Lorik Cana became one of the defining players of modern Albanian football. The defensive midfielder and centre-back played for clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille, Sunderland, Galatasaray and Lazio. He captained Albania during their historic EURO 2016 campaign and was one of the central figures of the generation that helped establish the national side at major-tournament level.

Elseid Hysaj

Elseid Hysaj developed into one of Albania's most recognisable modern defenders. His club career included Empoli, Napoli and Lazio, while his international career made him a regular presence in Albania's defensive structure. UEFA records Hysaj among Albania's leading players for EURO final-tournament appearances.

Thomas Strakosha

Thomas Strakosha emerged as one of Albania's leading goalkeepers of the modern era. He spent important years at Lazio and later continued his career in England. His international career has included appearances at both EURO 2016 and EURO 2024.

UEFA's EURO records show Albania have scored four goals across their two final-tournament appearances. Armando Sadiku scored in 2016, while Nedim Bajrami, Qazim Laçi and Klaus Gjasula scored for Albania at EURO 2024.

Albania's Football Identity

The national team has traditionally been built around defensive organisation, physical competitiveness and the ability to make matches difficult for technically stronger opponents. The modern side has increasingly added players comfortable with possession and playing in major European leagues.

The growth of Albanian players in leagues such as Serie A, the Premier League, Bundesliga and other European competitions has also helped raise the level of experience available to the national team.

At major tournaments, Albania have often relied on compact defending and quick transitions. The approach was particularly visible during EURO 2016, while the 2024 team showed more confidence in possession and attacking play.

Air Albania Stadium

Albania's main home venue is the Air Albania Stadium in Tirana. The modern stadium replaced the old Qemal Stafa Stadium and has become an important part of the country's football identity.

International matches in Tirana regularly provide the setting for some of Albania's biggest competitive games. The stadium is also used for major domestic football events.

Albania's Rivalries and Memorable Opponents

As a Balkan nation, Albania have developed a number of important football relationships with neighbouring countries. Matches against Serbia have carried particular significance, while encounters with Romania, Greece, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo have also attracted considerable attention.

Albania's historical meetings with Germany have also produced notable moments. The 0-0 draw against West Germany in 1967 remains one of the most famous results from the earlier period of the national team's history.

The Modern Albania National Team

The modern team entered a new phase after the 2024 European Championship. The qualification for EURO 2024 demonstrated that the breakthrough of 2016 was not an isolated event.

The 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign reinforced that progress. Albania finished second in Group K with 14 points and conceded only five goals. Their four points from two matches against Serbia were particularly important in securing the play-off position.

Albania eventually lost 2-1 to Poland in the March 2026 play-off semi-final, meaning the country must wait longer for its first World Cup final tournament appearance.

The team is now competing in the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League in League C. Rolando Maran is the current head coach, and Albania began the campaign with victories over Belarus and San Marino.

Conclusion

The history of the Albania national football team is built around a long wait for international recognition followed by a rapid rise in the modern era. From the 1946 Balkan Nations Cup victory to the first EURO appearance in 2016 and the return to the European Championship in 2024, Albania have gradually established themselves as a more competitive European national side.

The country is still waiting for its first World Cup appearance. The 2026 qualifying campaign showed how close Albania can now come, with a second-place finish and a place in the UEFA play-offs. The defeat to Poland ended that particular journey, but the team's progress across recent European Championship and World Cup qualifying campaigns has added an important new chapter to Albanian football history.

With a growing pool of players competing in European leagues and another Nations League campaign underway, the story of the Albania national football team continues to develop.
